Music Mondays- Goyte Feat. Kimbra

Hello Everyone! Life has been such a roller coaster lately! I appologize for not posting as often as I used to. I think that it's time for me to post another "Diary of a Pre-Med Student" post very soon! Anyways, it's a very gloomy day over in this region of town. I am praying for snow, though I doubt it will happen anytime soon! Anyways, have a great day out there! Here's a song that will be stuck in your head for a while ;)

Music Mondays-Fleet Foxes

One of my favorite bands, and favorite songs! Alex and I were suppose to go see them in Brooklyn this past weekend; however it unfortunately didn't work out. We are not giving up though! We hope to either see Fleet Foxes or visit NYC sometime in the future. Until then, I will just share the love on my blog. Enjoy! ;)

Music Mondays- Phantogram

Phantogram is an American electronic rock duo from Saratoga Springs,New York, consisting of guitarist Josh Carter and keyboardist Sarah Barthel. Barthel and Carter were friends since junior high school, but Phantogram did not officially form until 2007. That summer, Barthel returned home dissatisfied with pursuing a visual arts degree and Carter returned home after a brief stint in New York City with Grand Habit, an experimental band formed with his older brother, John. The two friends reunited and then worked on finishing some beat ideas Carter made earlier. They then finally formed the band.

The duo was originally called Charlie Everywhere when performing around the Saratoga Springs area on the local label Sub-Bombin Records. The band was soon dubbed the label's, "first big success" by the Albany Times Union after their energetic live performances and recorded tracks had the band searching for a larger record label to release their first EP.

The band signed with the BBE record label on January 26, 2009. Upon signing with BBE, the band changed their name to Phantogram to avoid any potential trademark issues.Their self-titled debut EP was released on May 12, 2009.

Music Mondays- The Sea and Cake

The Sea and Cake is an indie rock band with a pronounced jazz influence, which formed in the mid-1990s in Chicago out of the ashes of local bands The Coctails and Shrimp Boat. The group's name came from a willful reinterpretation (in the wake of an accidental miscomprehension) of "The C in Cake", a song by Gastr del Sol. Along with Shrimp Boat and The Coctails, groups related to The Sea and Cake include Tortoise and Gastr del Sol. In 1995, the band contributed the song "The Fontana" to the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Bothered produced by the Red Hot Organization. Starting with 1997's The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire essentially plays only drums in The Sea and Cake.

Music Mondays- Twin Shadow

Twin Shadow is the stage name of American musician George Lewis Jr. Lewis was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Florida. In 2000, Lewis moved to Boston where he started the band Mad Man Films, releasing two records independently. Around 2006, Lewis relocated to Brooklyn, NY and adopted the Twin Shadow moniker. In 2010 he released his debut album Forget, produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear. The album has been described as "steeped in 1980s new wave", "building from streaks of haunting synth textures", having "sophisticated melodies", "R&B intimacy", and "poetic lyrics", and "hazily new wave-tinged pop". Twin Shadow was the Rolling Stone 'Band of the Week' on October 7, 2010.

Music Mondays- Young the Giant

Hello everyone! I'm here with Music Monday! I know that today's artist pick is probably more mainstream than some of my other picks, but I love Young the Giant and more specifically, I love their song "Apartment" seeing as today starts the first week of me being moved in to my college year apartment!!! My mom surprised me last week with a lease form and a set of keys! This isn't the apartment that I will be sharing with Alex yet, but I am still very excited about it! Anyways, enough blabber! Here's today's pick:

Music Modays- The Bilinda Butchers

The bilinda butchers are two boys who make music together in their bedrooms. After dozing off together while listening to My Bloody Valentine one spring day, the pair awoke with the idea to form a group under the moniker of one of their idols. They set off in hopes of emulating the stylings of the these idols, but over time other influences began to mingle and eventually overtook their initial desires, leading them to a gentler and more sympathetic overall sound – a sound that they claim is best described as nostalgia pop.

Music Mondays- Blind Pilot

Blind Pilot is an American indie folk band based in Portland, Oregon. The group's single, "Go On, Say It", was chosen to be a Single of the Week on July 7, 2008 on Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store, potentially yielding approximately 2 million downloads. As of July 22, 2008, their debut album, 3 Rounds and a Sound, has reached number 13 on the Billboard Top Digital Albums chart.

Music Mondays- Okkervil River

Okkervil River is an indie rock band from Austin, Texas. Formed in 1998, the band takes its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya. They self-released their first album, Stars Too Small to Use, which led them to the South by Southwest music festival. After recording their first album in a garage, they signed with Jagjaguwar. Okkervil River continued by releasing four more albums, including critically lauded concept album Black Sheep Boy.

After a period of touring for Black Sheep Boy, Okkervil River followed up with The Stage Names. The album sold 10,000 in its opening week in the United States. The group released a free covers album, Golden Opportunities Mixtape from their live performances.

Okkervil River released the album The Stand Ins on September 9, 2008. They promoted the release with a series of cover songs from the album on YouTube by people they've met as a band. Their 2010 collaboration as a backing band with psychedelic rocker Roky Erickson yielded True Love Cast Out All Evil. On May 10, 2011, Okkervil River released their sixth full-length album, I Am Very Far.

Music Mondays- Theophilus London

Hello everyone! I'm back again to feed your inner music monkey ;)

This week, I want to focus on a particular music video by Theophilus London. The music video, Flying Overseas has to be one of my favorite music videos ever for a rap artist! First off, the song is so soothing and perfect for summer. It also features, Solange Knowles, who is an amazing singer! Now back to the music video, I love the woman that he features as his love interest in the video! In most hip hop videos, women with fair skin and long hair are featured and are barely clothed, and those women are viewed as beautiful. However, in this music video, his love interest is a women with glowing dark skin, and a buzz cut. And she is absolutely stunning! I'm actually a bit jealous at how fabulous she looks!

Music Mondays- The Besnard Lake

The Besnard Lakes are a Canadian indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Formed in 2003 by the husband and wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, two of their three albums have been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. The band are currently a four-piece centered around the atmospheric songs of Lasek and Goreas, whose expansive sound draws from numerous aspects of rock 'n' roll history. The band's name comes from Besnard Lake in North-Central Saskatchewan. The band's second album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse was recorded at singer Lasek's own Breakglass Studios, with members of Stars, The Dears and Godspeed You! Black Emperor/Silver Mt. Zion making guest appearances. It was nominated for the 2007 Polaris Music Prize. Many songs on The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse are prefaced by recordings from shortwave radio number stations as first made popular in recordings such as The Conet Project. The film Sympathy for Delicious, from actor/director Mark Ruffalo, will have a score composed by The Besnard Lakes.

Here We Go Magic is an American indie rock band based in Brooklyn, New York. Formerly the moniker of folk singer Luke Temple. Temple signed to Western Vinyl in 2008, followed in 2009 by the five-piece group's signing to Secretly Canadian.After previously releasing two folk albums under his own name in the mid-2000s, Luke Temple released a self-titled album as Here We Go Magic in February 2009 on Western Vinyl, described by Pitchfork Media as "hazy electronic textures, endlessly-spiraling lyrical loops, occasional forays into extended sections of ambiance and noise". Temple recorded the album at home on a 4-track recorder, describing the recording: "I just had one tom, one microphone, a synthesizer and an acoustic guitar. I didn’t have a full drum kit or normal bass, it was just all synth stuff that I did myself."

Music Mondays- The Helio Sequence

I plan to give you guys amazing talent every Monday to feed your inner music monkey. The band this Monday is The Helio Sequence. Thid duo is absolutely amazing and their sound gives you that airy, summer, feel-good vibe. If you haven't heard of them before, here is some more information:


The Helio Sequence is an indie rock band signed to label Sub Pop. The band was formed in 1999 in Beaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland, Oregon, and consists of Brandon Summers on guitar and vocals and Benjamin Weikel, who has also played for Modest Mouse, on keyboards and drums. The band produces an eccentric brand of indie rock mixed with electronic elements. To date, they have released two albums on Sub Pop, two on Portland-based label Cavity Search and a self-released EP. Their fourth album, entitled Keep Your Eyes Ahead, was released on January 29, 2008, by Sub Pop.

The Helio Sequence toured with the British band Keane through the U.S.A. and in June, 2010 they were Keane's support act in several gigs through Great Britain during the British band's Night Train Tour.
