Tell us a little about yourself:(age, school, hobbie, whatever you feel like sharing)

My name is Katia (durr) and I'm currently a design student studying Illustration in university! This pretty much sums up my hobbies too - drawing, painting, creating. I write, I knit, I do all sorts of artsy creative things, I sometimes lose count! On the other end of the hobby-spectrum however, I really love running/jogging! Because I have such a wide range of hobbies and things I love to do, I tend to keep myself extremely busy and take on far too many projects - but that's okay, I love it, I love accomplishing so many things even if they're super little things! I can be a workaholic, but I can be lazy too. I can be a total stay-at-home-and-play-video-games geek, but I also love going out with my friends. I guess I'm just a big mix of everything :)

Tell us about your blog:

Which one?!! Hahaha, the blog I put the most focus on at the moment is Kitty Snooks (my other is Love Potatoe). Kitty Snooks started as a feel-good project for me, something positive for me to focus on. The name "Kitty Snooks" comes from two nicknames that friends have given me, and I thought they sounded rather cute together so I stuck with it! It's basically a personal/lifestyle/fashion blog, though I rarely find the time for outfit pictures - being a student and balancing a social life, school work, a job, and all my hobbies can get really hectic (But so fun!). It's kind of a silly place for me to post my thoughts and hope that maybe someone will find something enjoyable or helpful out of it :)

What inspired you to join The Small World Project?

I have always, always wanted a pen pal. I LOVE LETTERS. My favourite part about going to summer camps when I was younger was always getting and sending letters home! Even though I was unable to participate with mail, and had to receive emails, I still absolutely loved writing out my letters to everyone else and imagining them opening up the letters and having my written words with them all the way wherever they are! 

What is your definition of cool?

Cool to me is different for each person. Everyone has something special that makes them cool - whether they let that part of them thrive or not is a different story. I find that a person's 'cool' side shines through the most when they are humble, natural, true-to-themselves people who see the world positively. It also depends greatly on how they treat other people, if they are kind-hearted and caring and considerate or not. Meaning that loud can be totally cool, quiet can be totally cool, outrageous can be totally cool, reserved can be totally cool, it doesn't matter at all so long as you're always REAL and KIND. 

How do  you fit this definition? What makes you cool?

I don't know if I'd call myself cool! I'm actually a total geek in so many ways, but I guess I always try to be kind towards others and am always considering others' feelings whether I know them well or not. I also try to be myself as much as possible, even if that means geeking out at pictures of cute puppies in class, or laughing until I go beat-red and something funny I saw while looking out the window, in front of all my classmates and my profs. 

Who inspires you to be cool?

My friends. I have this amazing group of friends from highschool who I learned to be myself with. They can be the biggest group of 5 year olds, we would make faces at each other from across the room in classes, we'd make up silly nicknames for each other, but we'd also all support each other and stick by one another when we went through rough patches. Now, in university and still as close as ever, I know that these are REAL people, and that's the ultimate cool :)

If your life could have a theme song or a motto, what would it be?

"When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. If life gives you a tough situation, make the best of it."

I sort of worked that one out in my head years back when I was going through some rough stuff, and since then it's helped me through every other rough patch I've been through!

The Small World Project-Melissa

Hello everyone! Before we prepare for our second month of The Small World Project (we still have two spots left! email me if you are interested!), I would like to make sure that you know a little bit more about the lovely ladies who started the first cycle! Tell us a little about yourself:(age, school, hobbie, whatever you feel like sharing) I'm a 21 year old student attending Appalachian State University studying Public Relations with a focus in nonprofit organizations and minoring in Sociology! I graduate this May (yay!) so I'm on my way to figuring out my next step. I have a ton of hobbies and am the type of person to fill up my day with activities. Sometimes I tend to over schedule myself, I just love to experience everything. My main hobbies include photography, thrifting, arts and crafts, diy projects and traveling. I love supporting local restaurants and local businesses.

Tell us about your blog: My blog is a little of everything in my life. I share my photography, adventures, little projects, things I'm obsessed with, stories and everything in between. I'm still trying to find my blog "niche," but so far it's just been a great outlet for my creativity and for making new friends.

What inspired you to join The Small World Project? Meeting new people! I absolutely love it. I feel as though everyone has a story to tell and I want to be able to meet strangers and exchange stories. I am such a huge fan of handwritten letters and I always try my hardest to send handwritten thank you notes. As much as I love the internet, blogging and email, nothing compares to receiving a letter in the mail.

What is your definition of cool? Cool is confidence. Not that cocky-over-the-top confidence, but the confidence and respect you have for yourself and those around it. It's to be nobody but yourself in a world that's doing its best to make you somebody else. Cool is knowing what you want and knowing what's best for you, and fighting for it.

How do you fit this definition? What makes you cool? I like to think that I have a good head on my shoulders and I can't say that I know what's best for me all the time, but I definitely strive for it. I strive to stay true to myself and have respect for myself and everyone around me.

Who inspires you to be cool?  I have the greatest support system. I have the best friends and a stronger family. They inspire me daily to be true to myself and be everything that they know I can be!

If your life could have a theme song or a motto, what would it be? My favorite motto would be, "The only constant is change." Change is constantly happening in my life along with everyone else and its important to be able to accept those changes and and go with it. I like to think that I'm adaptable and that is an important key to living life. Accept change!

Anything else? Blogging has just opened up so many doors for me and I really have made a great network of friends! I can't wait to see what else blogging will bring to my life. I'm pretty new to it, but I absolutely love meeting new people and changing strangers into friends.

Hello! I hope that everyone has recovered from their Halloween madness! I would like to start this post off by welcoming my new readers! I am so surprised by how many readers I have received in just a few months! Welcome! Back to the post; I've been trying to think of a way to include my readers more with The Small World Project participants, therefore, I asked the lovely ladies to do interviews so that you could know a little bit more about them! Tell us a little about yourself:(age, school, hobbie, whatever you feel like sharing)

Im 20 and I'm a junior at the University at Albany. I love to read and braid hair. I also have an addiction to Auntie Anne's almond pretzels with sweet glaze. If you haven't had one TRY IT!

Tell us about your blog:

My blog has minimal direction to be honest. It's about hair, music, nails and food (coming soon). I like to find inspiration in little things, simple things and that is what I want my blog to convey. 

What inspired you to join The Small World Project?

Since the first day I stumbled upon Bree's page I bookmarked it so when I saw the project I knew I had to take part. I love getting mail, even if its a bill, sad I know, lol. 

In my eyes the Small World Project was somewhat revolutionary. It was the rejection of the impersonal ideology of "social networking". It allowed for human reconnection and I loved that. 

What is your definition of cool?

My definition of cool believing in yourself and the decisions that you make. Everyone can tell you what they think you should do, but at the end of the day no one walks in your shoes but YOU.

How do  you fit this definition? What makes you cool?

I've always been headstrong and I hate people telling me what to do. I'll heed advice, matter fact I LOVE advice but I've learned if you don't know how to say no people will try to live through you. So I'd say I'm cool because I prefer the road not taken :)

Who inspires you to be cool?

My fiance, he's really taught me to enjoy the little things in life and be firm about the decisions I make. My kindness has tended to be my weakness and he's helped me work on that. 

If your life could have a theme song or a motto, what would it be?

"When work feels overwhelming, remember that your going to die."- I know, I know your probably thinking "wth", let me explain, lol. I tend to get extremely stressed out and I'm starting to learn that you can only do what you can do. Over-thinking, stressing and pulling out your hair will only get you more trouble than your looking for, so LET IT BE. STRESS FREE!

Tell us a little about yourself:
I'm a twenty-something year youngster who's trying to figure out my little place in this itty bitty world. On my spare time, I like to bother my husband to go on walks with me to the park.

What inspired you to start your online shop, Robots in Trouble?
I had many people tell me that I should open an online shop for my knick knacks. I wasn't sure if I should do it, but I thought "Who of my friends owns an online shop? No one! So, I might as well be the first." :}

If you could have a working robot for a month, what would you make it do?
I think it would be nice to have a little helper for my shop. I'd assign for it to cut felts for me, and possibly sew when I'm tired!

What tips do you have any tips for anyone trying to start an online business?
The first couple of months that you open your shop, don't focus on the sales. Instead, have fun advertising your shop to other people!

How has your blog helped your business?
My blog used to be called "Abby's in Trouble Again", but when I opened my shop, I incorporate my blog to it so that my followers will be the first insiders. That's when I decided to change  "Abby's in Trouble Again" to "Robots in Trouble".

What is the craziest adventure that you and your husband, Chris have gotten into?
We got married after being together as bf/gf for five months. No one really knew that we got married until we changed our status on Facebook from "in a relationship" to "married".

What is your life's motto?

Happy Friday, Everyone! Today's Featured Friday is Etsy shop owner, Liz. I had the pleasure of talking to Liz a few weeks ago to talk about her shop, Craft to the Radio. In our interview she told me about her inspiration for starting her shop and what crafting materials she likes to work with the most. Let's see what she has to say!

Tell us a little about Craft to the Radio.

Recently I found a big box of buttons, chains and fabrics in my mom's basement. I started making jewelry with some of the interesting pieces. It quickly became a hobby I really enjoyed. I work at a high-stress office job, crafting is a great way for me to be creative and relax after work. 

What inspired you to start your Etsy Shop, Craft to the Radio?

 I was wearing a pair of earrings I made one day and a co-worker complimented them and mentioned that he would love to buy a pair for his girlfriend. He then encouraged me to turn my hobby into a business. 

What prints, patterns or materials are inspiring your newest pieces in your collection? 

All things vintage! I have been recently addicted to the show Mad Men (thanks to Netflix Instant Watch). Their 1950's style on the show has been really inspiring.

If you could make jewelry for any celebrity, who would it be and what would you make?

Zooey Deshanel! I love her retro style with a modern twist.

How do you choose what materials you make your jewelry out of?

I get a lot of the materials at thrift stores. I look for fabrics and buttons that are unique.

I also know that you have a blog! Could you tell us about that?

Yes! I have been blogging for several years. My main topic is music. I post weekly mixes and write about new bands that are worth checking out.  Some other topics I cover are fashion, books and current events. Stop by and say hello! I love the blogosphere and discovering new blogs to follow.

I live in a town in South London and have done all my life. I love living in the city and being so close to everything!

Tell us a little about yourself: (This could be your age, your University, a few hobbies, etc.)

My name is Lillie and I'm twenty years old, soon to be the big ol' two - one! In October I'll be starting my third year at drama school in London. I study at Central School of Speech and Drama in North London. The work load can be a mother f at points (if you'll excuse my foul language!) and doesn't leave me much time to do much else. I told myself that when I had a bit of time in the summer I would start a fashion blog because I'd actually have time to sit and write what I want instead of worry about dealines for university projects. Writing is a brilliant thing and something I really enjoy doing anyway, I think you can tell a lot about a person by how they write! I love shopping, like most girls I'm sure, but just don't have the storage space for all of my bloody clothes! If someone would like to extend my house and fit in a walk in wardrobe I'd be most obliged! I also love music and going and seeing bands, a few of my favourites are Alkaline Trio, Vampire Weekend, and Animal Collective.

Tell us about your blog: (purpose/mission statement of your blog)

I've only just recently started my blog but when I thought about what I'd originally like to write about I thought about the things that I like to read on other people's blogs first. I love seeing tutorials and DIY creations and seeing the process of making things for very little money but a lot of creativity. I also wanted to use my blog as a way of documenting what I'm doing on a purely personal level. I suppose this thought came about last week when I thought back to some of the months earlier this year and literally couldn't remember a single thing that happened in some of them.  This worried me so much and I thought that perhaps by writing a blog I'd be documenting what I'm up to as a visual reminder for myself that events did happen so they are not forgotten! Through my blog I suppose I want to highlight the importance of dressing how you like and it doesn't have to cost the world, you can make things yourself, there are charity shops and some of the best looks out there, I think, are ones that are just thrown together or look like you've just raided your Grandma's wardrobe for her vintage dresses and shoes ! Not that I'm encouraging theft in the family. Always ask your Granny first.

What is your definition of cool?

I think having your own identity and not caring what other people think or caring about how other people see you is being cool. Oh and maybe more importantly- having manners and respecting other people makes you cool.

How do you fit this definition?

Haha, I like to think I'm well mannered and respectful as much as possible. Please and thank you's cost nothing but go a long way. I'm working on not caring about what other people think, but you have to have some thick-ass skin for something like that!

I am a 23 year old, vintage obsessed, tattooed stylist and fashion blogger!

What is your favorite vintage outfit?

I am so bad at favorites when it comes to my wardrobe, this post on one of my 70's floral minis is at the top of the list though!

What tips do you have any tips for any amateur vintage seekers reading?

Learn to sew! Vintage doesn't always come perfect, learn to hem, to switch out buttons and replace zippers. Also, check out flea markets, garage and estate sales as well as your usual thrift stores.

How can you tell whether a vintage find is retro chic, or just needs to be retired?

It depends on your personal taste. Vintage treasure usually coincides with whats in style now. Ex: 90's floral rompers and crop tops were thrift store junk until a couple years ago!

Do you personally find more cute vintage clothing or accessories?

I find lots of both! It just depends on the day.

What are a few of your favorite places to buy vintage?

Northern California, the smaller cities around San Francisco have amazing stuff!

Featured Friday!- Amber Talks Vintage!

Hello everyone! The lovely Amber from The Owl's Den is here to talk to us about her vintage finds! She also shares a few tips on how to handle very old, retired vintage. Read her interview, and don't forget to visit her blog ;)

Tell us a little about yourself: (This could be your age, your University, a few hobbies, etc.): Well I just recently turned 21 and I'll be going on my final year of college for my B.A in Restaurant, Food and Beverage Management. I eventually want to start my own cafe/coffee shop that showcases local artist plus great coffee and food, but in the mean time I'm thinking of expanding my etsy shop. I enjoy drawing, painting, making jewelry, reading and checking out thrift stores when I get the chance. I'm a pretty laid back person that likes hanging out with close friends and just talking.

What is your favorite vintage find? I have so many good finds, I'm surprised at how cheap I got some of these amazing items. If I had to choose one it has to be the small sliding credenza I got for only $10. I checked out my usual thrift store that has good furniture and they were using it to showcase some hideous 80's lamps. When I asked the price I was surprised, I was expecting to haggle down. The funny thing was she actually asked if $10 was too much, of course I said it wasn't but I probably could have gotten it cheaper. I was gitty as a school girl when I got it in the house :) It has some minor injuries but nothing I can't fix. I plan on using it as a t.v console once I find something to replace it as being our catch all table. 

What tips do you have any tips for any amateur vintage seekers reading? There are so many but here are some basic ones for those that are new to thrifting. Don't give up on your first try; just because you don't find the ultimate find on the first stop doesn't mean you won't find something at another store or on a different day. Check out stores after the donation day; usually thrift stores have a day they usually close to receive shipments so they should be stocked the next day with goodies. Think outside the box; look for things you can upcycle example the $1 cat planter I found may look a little creepy but with a can of spray paint it'll look like I bought it from Modcloth or Urbanoutfitters. Lastly find the thrift stores that fit you; I look for furniture a lot so I know what thrift store that offer furniture and which ones stick to clothing. 

How can you tell whether a vintage find is retro chic, or just needs to be retired? I believe it is in the eye of the beholder in this case. Sometimes you can definitively spot the retired items but sometimes the ones that look retired simple need some love and care. There are a few things I wish I had now that I dismissed as a teen when I'd check out thrift stores. If you like it and fits your style (or you know you can make it better) get it and never look back!

What are a few of your favorite places to buy vintage?  Christen Ministries has some furniture, vintage fabrics cute knic-knacks and such for a decent price. There is a locally owned place that I've had good luck with furniture plus it's in an old hardware store so they have marked down wood stains and little tools for sale. I also check Goodwill for clothing and accessories when I get the chance.

I actually started this blog as a interior design blog but I felt it was a bit more than just that. I still do post about decorating the apartment and similar post, but I mix it with projects and personal post. I love sharing project ideas and such to show others that they can be creative too.

What DIY hair care tricks can you suggest for our readers, for these hot summer days?
The summer time can be dreadful for natural hair girls! The heat and
humidity can really take a toll on our delicate strands. I would suggest
carrying round a small spray bottle filled with water, glycerin, and your
favorite essential oil to use as a refresher. This will help keep your hair
hydrated and moisturized.


What is the best thing that you've ever done for your hair?                                       The best thing I’ve done for my hair is let it be. “She” is her own boss. LOL, yes I know that may sound weird by my hair has a “mind” of its own. Most curly girls may agree
with that.

I've noticed that you have a new blog, Lush in Flats! Could you tell us about it? 
I decided to create Lush in Flats because I wanted an outlet to display my love
for unique style, fashion, makeup and other randomness! On L.I.F. you will
find OOTD (outfit of the day posts), makeup reviews, DIY projects, recipes
and MUCH more! I chose the name Lush in Flats for this blog for a couple
reasons. One because I LOVE wearing ballet flats; heels are nice sometimes
but most of the time you will catch me in some comfy, stylish low to the
ground flats! Second because I love the word lush. Lush means appealing
to the senses, luxurious and lavish! I figured it was fitting to my style and
personality!


Where is your favorite place to shop online? OMG! I have so many favorites but
I would have to say Ebay and Etsy! LOVE those 2 sites. I can find any and
everything I need on them.


What is your favorite bargain hunting item? My thrifted Tory Burch “Reva” flats
would have to be my favorite bargain item. In Nordstrom they retail for
over $200 and I found mine for less than half the price.

Tell us a little about yourself: I'm 22. I'm also a sucker for stories of high adventure and endless romance

Tell us about your blog: The Dewey Decimals is a lifestyle blog made by two bookworms. We frequently focus our posts on fashion but we also talk about teaching techniques, literature appreciation and promoting literacy in our communities.

What is your definition of cool?

Have you ever heard of the term DGAF? Being cool is essentially the art of DGAF. It's so funny to see that people (errr, my 6th grade self) try so hard to be cool, but when they stop caring about it all they are suddenly the coolest cat on the block.

How do  you fit this definition? What makes you cool? 

hahahaha, I don't really have any talents or skills that make me fit the definition of cool. I am myself, and that's it. A couple years ago I lived in NYC then Amsterdam for a while, that experience taught me to keep to myself and enjoy each moment. When I came back to California I thought of everything as an opportunity to challenge my creativity (especially with clothing!) and be completely honest with myself. People often mistake creativity+honesty as being cool, I think it's just me being me.

Who inspires you to be cool?

I just love the way each person holds their selves and is all dgaf at the cameras. hahahaha, I also love looking at Irving Penn's photography. His stuff is really inspirational--I like to think of them as the first modern documentation of how to be cool.

If your life could have a theme song, what would it be?

Ouu, that's a difficult questions! hahahaha, there's this old Brazilian movie called "Orfeu Negro" ("Black Orpheus"). It has a really great song on their album called Manhã De Carnaval ("Morning of Carnival")... that song would be my theme song forever. hmmm... be yourself! I know that's a silly and cliche thing to say but it's so true. In my opinion, the coolest people are the ones who are not afraid to be themselves, love who they are and enjoy life. It might take you a while to figure out the kind of person you are, it took me nearly 21 years!

Featured Friday!- Danielle

Hello, my lovely readers! I have another feature for you today! I had the pleasure of interviewing the wonderful Danielle of Fashion Indie Love Affair! Make sure that you check out her blog, but first let's see what Danielle has to say:

Tell us a little about yourself:my day job is sales but my night job is fashion and music blogging :)  i could spend hours every night tearing through magazines, surfing the internet and digging around on itunes for new music.  

Tell us about your blog:my blog is called fashion indie love affair/indie electronic alternative.  every morning i do a music post with a rad song i love.  then later in the day i do a fashion post with personal outfit pics or a write up about a label/designer i love.  my motto: escape mainstream music, break fashion boundaries, get inspired.  my mission in life is to share kick ass music and my my personal fashion sense with the world!

What is your definition of cool?: i think it's cool to stand out in a crowd and be an original.  there's only one you and you should embrace it!  i also think it's cool to be nice to everyone because i firmly believe karma will bite you in the butt.  i try to live in a judgement free zone and treat others how i'd like to be treated.  it makes the world such a more pleasant place.  

How do  you fit this definition? What makes you cool?                                                  i think i'm cool because i'm true to myself.  i won't wear a trend just because it's "in style".  and i won't stop wearing my favorite things just because they're no longer "in style".  i don't listen to the radio.  i try to shy away from most mainstream music because i feel like indie/electronic/alternative music has more substance.  i also think i'm cool because i manage to fit into the cool crowd without succumbing to the peer pressure to act or look a certain way.  you don't have to be like everyone else just to fit in.  i'm the happiest now than i've ever been because i'm finally just being me! 

Who inspires you to be cool?:                                                                                        since i started my blog my readers inspire me to be cool.  i dress for them as much as i dress for myself.  i'm constantly now challenging myself to put more thought into my outfits and my music selections so i can always keep things fresh for my readers.  

If your life could have a theme song, what would it be?:                                                  the knife, "heartbeats".  i've listened to it at least once a day for the last 4 years.  once i ran a 5k in 100 degree heat with it on repeat.  i swear it's the only reason i made it out alive.  :)  this song will change your life.
